How to choose the correct PTO shaft
1) Determine the engine HP rating and PTO speed of your tractor ( ie: 55hp, 540rpm ) NOTE: Reduce HP rating by 40% for severe conditions
2) Choose a driveshaft range which has a higher HP rating than your tractor (ie: Series 6, -64hp@540rpm)
NOTE: if your need is to run a light application like a fertiliser spreader then you probably don’t have to consider a higher HP shaft. Using a light weight Pto shaft will probably be your best bet.
3) Take 3 measurements of the distance between PTO shaft protruding from rear of tractor and the gearbox shaft on the implement. (ie: overall distance to where end of PTO shaft sleeve would sit)
a) Measure with implement fully raised
b) Measure with implement at mid height
c) Measure with implement flat on the ground
4) Note the shortest and Longest measurements, this is your working range.
5) Select a drive shaft that either fits this working range or is longer than the working range so it can be shortened down.
